Terms of Service
Draft, not final. Renovate's operating business entity is not yet formally registered. Every reference below to "the Company," governing law, and dispute venue is a placeholder pending business formation, and this document as a whole is pending a lawyer's review before Renovate goes live. See the matching notice on the Privacy Policy.
Acceptance of terms
By creating a Renovate account or using the Service, you agree to these Terms of Service and to our Privacy Policy, which is incorporated into these terms by reference. If you don't agree, don't use Renovate.
Eligibility
You must be at least 18 years old and capable of forming a binding contract to use Renovate. By using the Service, you confirm you meet this requirement. Renovate manages household finances and contracts with third parties (contractors, suppliers), which is why the age floor here is higher than a typical consumer app.
Accounts and collaborators
You're responsible for keeping your login credentials secure and for all activity under your account. Tell us right away at support@renovate.app if you suspect unauthorized access.
Renovate is built for collaboration: an account owner can invite collaborators (partners, advisors, contractors) to a shared renovation, and grant access via share links. If you're an owner or admin inviting others, you're responsible for making sure you have the right to share the renovation's content with the people you invite.
Subscriptions and billing
Some Renovate features require a paid subscription ("Plus"). Subscriptions renew automatically at the end of each billing period (currently monthly) until cancelled, at the then-current price unless we notify you of a price change in advance as required by law.
Paddle is the merchant of record. All purchases you make on Renovate are made through our reseller, Paddle.com Market Limited, who is the merchant of record for all our orders and provides all customer service inquiries related to your purchase. Paddle handles payment collection, sales tax/VAT, invoicing, and related customer service for the transaction; it is a party to that transaction on our behalf and its own terms (Paddle's Buyer Terms) apply to the purchase itself, alongside these Terms for your use of Renovate.
We never see or store your full card number. Paddle's own privacy and buyer terms govern the payment data you give it directly.
Free trial
New renovations get a limited-time trial (currently 30 days, no card required) that unlocks collaborator invites, calendar sync, image galleries, and document integration at no cost. Features that carry a real ongoing cost to us, specifically Renovate-hosted AI, MCP/external AI access, and expanded storage, are not included in the no-card trial and require an active paid subscription (which may itself include its own Paddle-billed trial period, disclosed at checkout). We may change trial terms, including length or what's included, at any time, and trial-only access does not carry forward once a trial ends.
Cancellation and refunds
You can cancel your subscription at any time; cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period, and you keep paid access until then. To cancel or request a refund, contact support@renovate.app (a self-service cancellation option inside Settings is planned but not yet available).
Refunds are handled under Paddle's standard buyer refund policy. [The exact refund window needs confirming against Paddle's current published Buyer Terms before this goes live: this section should not be treated as final until that number is verified against Paddle's dashboard/docs, per the open question tracked in the launch-terms-and-policies plan.] Outside of Paddle's standard window, refunds are at our discretion, for example for a billing error or a service outage that materially prevented you from using Renovate.
EU/UK right of withdrawal
Under EU and UK consumer law, you normally have 14 days to withdraw from an online purchase without giving a reason. This right does not apply once performance of a service, or supply of digital content, has begun with your prior express consent and acknowledgment that you thereby lose your withdrawal right (Article 16(m), EU Consumer Rights Directive 2011/83/EU, and the equivalent UK provision).
By starting checkout and beginning a subscription, you expressly request immediate access to Renovate's paid features and acknowledge that you lose your right of withdrawal once that access begins. [Whether Paddle's hosted checkout UI already captures this acknowledgment needs confirming; if it doesn't, an explicit checkbox needs to be added to Renovate's own checkout flow rather than relying on this clause alone, per the open item in the launch-terms-and-policies plan.]
Acceptable use
When using Renovate, you agree not to:
- Use the Service for anything unlawful, fraudulent, or harmful to others
- Attempt to gain unauthorized access to another user's account or renovation data
- Reverse-engineer, decompile, or attempt to extract the source code of the app, except where that restriction is prohibited by applicable law
- Interfere with or disrupt the Service's infrastructure, or attempt to bypass rate limits, storage quotas, or entitlement checks
- Use the Service to store or transmit content that infringes someone else's intellectual property or violates their privacy rights
- Use automated means to scrape or extract data from Renovate outside of the documented API/CLI you're authorized to use with your own account
We may suspend or terminate accounts that violate this section.
Your content
You own the content you put into Renovate: your renovation data, documents, photos, contacts, and messages ("your content"). We don't sell it, and we don't use it to train AI models.
You grant us a limited license to host, store, back up, process, and display your content solely to provide and improve the Service to you and the collaborators you invite, and as otherwise described in the Privacy Policy. That license ends when you delete the content or your account, except for copies that persist briefly in backups until they roll off our normal retention schedule.
You're responsible for having the right to upload and share whatever you put into Renovate, including any content about contractors or other third parties you add as contacts.
Third-party integrations and AI
Renovate lets you optionally connect third-party services, Google Calendar, a self-hosted Paperless-ngx instance, and AI providers (bring-your-own-key or, on paid plans, Renovate's own AI key). When you enable one of these, your use of that third party is also governed by its own terms, and we are not responsible for how it handles data once it receives it. See the AI features and Google Calendar sections of the Privacy Policy for how consent and data flow work for each.
License to use Renovate
Subject to these terms, we grant you a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to access and use Renovate for your own personal or household renovation management, on devices you own or control.
If you install Renovate through the Apple App Store, Apple's Licensed Application End User License Agreement (the standard EULA at apple.com/legal/internet-services/itunes/dev/stdeula) also applies to your use of the iOS app, in addition to these Terms. Where the two conflict on scope of license, Apple's EULA governs for the iOS app specifically; these Terms govern everything else (your account, subscriptions, content, and use of the web and Android apps).
Our intellectual property
Renovate's software, design, branding, and trademarks are ours (or our licensors') and are not covered by the content license above. Nothing in these terms transfers any of that to you beyond the limited license to use the app as intended.
Termination
You can delete your account at any time from Settings. We may suspend or terminate your account if you violate these terms, if required by law, or if we discontinue the Service (with reasonable notice where practical). On termination, your right to use Renovate ends immediately; your data is handled as described in the Privacy Policy's Data retention section.
Disclaimer of warranties
Renovate is provided "as is" and "as available," without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. We don't warrant that the Service will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that any AI-generated content, summary, or extraction will be accurate; you're responsible for verifying anything AI-generated before relying on it, especially for budget or contract decisions. Nothing in this section limits any warranty that can't be excluded under applicable consumer-protection law, including for EU/UK users.
Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, Renovate and its operators are not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for lost profits or data, arising from your use of the Service. Our total liability for any claim relating to the Service is limited to the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim arose, or $100 if you're on the free plan. This section does not limit liability that can't be excluded under applicable law, including liability for death, personal injury, fraud, or (for EU/UK consumers) any liability that mandatory consumer-protection law does not allow us to exclude.
Indemnification
You agree to indemnify and hold us harmless from claims, damages, and expenses (including reasonable legal fees) arising from your violation of these terms, your content, or your misuse of the Service, except to the extent caused by our own breach of these terms or negligence.
Governing law and disputes
[Governing law, venue, and any arbitration clause are pending business-entity formation and lawyer review, and are deliberately left blank rather than guessed at here.] Nothing in this section is intended to, and nothing here should be read to, remove statutory consumer protections or your right to bring a claim in your local courts where applicable law (including EU/UK consumer law) guarantees that right regardless of any governing-law or venue clause we eventually add.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms as the product changes. If we make material changes, we'll notify you by email or an in-app notice before they take effect. Continuing to use Renovate after changes take effect means you accept them; if you don't agree, you can cancel your subscription and delete your account.
